Food & Dining Out
Perfect produce, whether you’re dining in or out!
Whether you’re dining out, entertaining or just feeding the family at home, there’s no doubt
that here in the Cotswolds we really are spoilt for choice. It’s no accident that some of
the greatest chefs in the world come to the area to ply their trade, but the beauty of the
countryside and our picturesque pubs and restaurants are only half of the story- the other is
the availability of the fantastic ingredients growing on the doorstep.
Known as ‘the fruit and vegetable basket of England’, the Vale of Evesham has long
harboured a reputation for producing the very finest seasonal produce and across the
Cotswolds even the simplest country pub can promise excellence on its menu. Not only
that but, by keeping food miles to a minimum, everywhere from local farm shops to neighbourhood
supermarkets have access to the freshest seasonal green groceries from just down the road.
In addition, recent years have seen an explosion of award-winning cheese and drinks producers
across the region.
One of the great consolations of the cold winter days is being able to enjoy cuisine that uses
the wonderful seasonal vegetables available locally. From stews packed with root
vegetables like parsnips, carrots, turnips or swede to brassicas and leafy greens such as
broccoli, cabbages, kale and chard, along with that eternal Christmas favourite, sprouts,
shoppers don’t have to look far for inspiration. Add to them seasonal winter fruits like
apples, pears quince and chestnuts, and Cotswoldians’ tables are blessed with an
embarrassment of riches during the darker months.
If you’re in the mood to eat out, The Cotswolds offers everything from Michelin-starred restaurants in
glorious towns and villages like Cheltenham, Malmesbury or even tiny Whatcote, but there’s a huge choice
of top-notch establishments to savouracross the region, whether you want a simple but filling breakfast or
a slap-up lunch or evening meal. Check out the CotswoldXL guide to the best places to dine out or gather
your own ingredients for a fine feast from our featured purveyors of perfect produce!
