The Beatles, Harold Wilson & Me: An Evening with Alan Johnson

A fascinating blend of music, politics and personal storytelling is coming to the Cotswolds, as Alan Johnson takes to the stage with his new live show, The Beatles, Harold Wilson & Me.
Spanning a series of spring dates, the tour offers audiences a rare opportunity to hear from one of Britain’s most respected political figures in a completely different light. With performances across the region, including The Kenton Theatre and The Players Theatre, one date of particular interest for Cotswolds audiences is Friday 17th April at Cidermill Theatre.
Best known for his time at the heart of government during the Blair and Brown years, Johnson held some of the most senior roles in cabinet, including Health Secretary, Education Secretary and Home Secretary. Yet beyond Westminster, there has always been another side to his story, a lifelong love of music and a youthful dream of becoming a pop star.
This live show brings those two worlds together. Through personal anecdotes and reflections, Johnson charts his journey from a challenging childhood in West London to the corridors of power, revealing how his life intersected with cultural icons like The Beatles and political figures such as Harold Wilson.
As Johnson himself puts it:
“The 60s was an historic decade. If you lived through it this could be an evening of nostalgia; if you didn’t it could be an evening of discovery. Either way there will be music and humour with a smattering of social history.”
The evening is split into two engaging halves. The first takes the form of an “in conversation” format, where carefully selected music clips provide the backdrop to stories and reflections. The second half opens up to the audience, with an informal Q&A that invites participation and creates a relaxed, intimate atmosphere.
Blending humour, nostalgia and insight, the show offers more than just a look back, it’s a reflection on how music and politics helped shape modern Britain. For those with an interest in post-war history, or simply a love of great storytelling, it promises to be a memorable night.
As John Lennon famously said, “life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” In this case, it’s a life well worth hearing about.
