The Magic of Beans and Pulses and Why They’re Perfect for a Healthy Life

The Magic of Beans and Pulses and Why They’re Perfect for a Healthy Life

Beans and pulses - part of the legume family- are a small, often underrated, powerful superfood from Mother Nature’s larder. They have something of a reputation due to their impact on the gut, but the truth is that they can contribute significantly to a healthy diet.

Beans and pulses are incredibly nutritious; it’s no surprise they’re a dietary staple worldwide. They contain antioxidants and vital minerals like iron, folate, and magnesium. They’re also high in fibre and protein with a low glycaemic index, which means they cause a slower and smaller rise in blood sugar levels after consumption. Essentially, this means you will feel fuller for longer. But the magic doesn’t stop there; they are also great for your heart. They can reduce cholesterol, lower your blood pressure, and decrease your risk of coronary heart disease - the leading cause of heart attacks. Additionally, the fibre that gives beans their questionable reputation actually indicates that they’re keeping our guys healthy by acting as a prebiotic.

The various fibre types in beans and pulses act as prebiotic precursors, which are ingested by beneficial microorganisms in the gut. This fermentation process promotes gut health, boosts immunity, and helps minimise inflammation. This is important because inflammation is a significant factor in a range of acute and chronic illnesses. Additionally, science tells us that good gut health, which minimises inflammation in our bodies, also promotes a feeling of well-being in our minds.

There’s no denying that these tiny foodstuffs pack a pretty powerful health punch.

But the real magic of beans lies in their cost, cultivation and availability. They are inexpensive, relatively easy to produce, and incredibly versatile. Plus, they’re eco-friendly and sustainable.

As far as healthy improvements go, you can’t go far wrong with beans and pulses. If they haven’t been your thing in the past, introduce them gradually. Perhaps add a handful of lentils to your Bolognese, lasagne, or cottage pie. Or toss some chickpeas into a salad or casserole. There are endless options for cooking with beans and pulses, and an abundance of health benefits -what’s not to like?
