Tradition Returns: Cirencester Mop Fair Returns This October!

One of the county’s most beloved and historic events is making its way back to Cirencester this October, as Nichols Amusements of the Showmen's Guild of Great Britain bring the much-anticipated Mop Fair back to town!

A Glimpse Into History

Dating all the way back to the 12th century, the Mop Fair isn’t just your average funfair — it's a living tradition. Originally, Mop Fairs served as hiring events, where workers would gather in town squares carrying the tools of their trade to signal they were seeking employment. A shepherd might carry a crook, while a cook might brandish a ladle. The term “Mop” came from the mops (bundles of yarn) that housemaids wore on their clothing to indicate their trade.

Over time, as the nature of employment changed, these fairs transformed into something far more festive — and today, they're cherished for their family fun, colorful lights, thrilling rides, and bustling community spirit.

A Century of Fun with Nichols Amusements

The Nichols family has been at the heart of Cirencester’s Mop Fairs for over 100 years. The tradition started with William Nichols, who presented the Buckingham Charter Fair, and continues today with Marshall Nichols, a third-generation showman who passionately keeps the legacy alive.

Working closely with the Cirencester Town Council, Marshall and the Nichols Amusements team have ensured the Mop Fair continues to delight locals and visitors alike, while honouring the historic Charter that dates back over 700 years.

• Monday, October 13, 2025 | ⏰ 12:00 PM – 10:00 PM

To accommodate the fair, road closures in the town centre will be in effect from 4:00 PM on Sunday until midnight on Monday each week. Set-up begins at 4:00 PM Sunday, so expect to see the town buzzing with activity as the fair rolls in.
